What is a Parent Champion?
A Parent Champion is a parent with a child or young person with special educational needs or disability (SEND) who works with us on a voluntary basis to reach out and befriends other parents in Harrow. Most of them have attended an IPSEA SEND Law and Local Offer training so they can direct parents to helpful sources of information and advice. They are our link in schools, nurseries and in other community groups and active members of the Harrow Parent Forum. They help us to make sure all parents’ voices are represented.
What does a Parent Champion do?
Parent Champions provide information on a wide range of topics. You can share your experience of having a child with SEND and have your say about how services should be run. They can provide information about what is available on the Local Offer and where to go to for support. You can ask them about Short Breaks (respite), which includes playschemes and afterschool clubs. They can also tell you about how you can get the Max Card, which is a special needs discount card, for your family to use at lots of different places such as Legoland, Alton Towers, and Thorpe Park. Some can also help with translation of information about benefits and other useful things if they are from different cultures and speak other additional languages. Parent Champions helps parents have their say and helps the forum to be more representative.
Who can become a Parent Champion?
Any parent of a child or young person up to the age of 25 years can become a Parent Champion. We will provide training on different aspects of SEND, EHC plans and on SEND law through IPSEA. You will also receive training on what is available locally on the Local Offer and nationally. You can do as little or as much as you are able to do, when you want to. We will also provide you with a certificate of training and a reference if and when you want to find a new job. You will be joining a supportive community network of parents helping eachother.
